Eight daily newspapers owned by Alden Global Capital sued OpenAI and Microsoft on Tuesday, accusing the tech companies of illegally using news articles to power their A.I. All are owned by MediaNews Group or Tribune Publishing, subsidiaries of Alden, the country’s second-largest newspaper operator. In the complaint, the publications accuse OpenAI and Microsoft of using millions of copyrighted articles without permission to train and feed their generative A.I. products, including ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. This, it said, reduced the need for readers to pay subscriptions to support local newspapers and deprived the publishers of revenue both from subscriptions and from licensing their content elsewhere.

Eight U.S. newspaper publishers filed suit against Microsoft and OpenAI in a New York federal court on Tuesday, claiming the technology companies reuse their articles without permission in generative artificial intelligence products and incorrectly attribute inaccurate information to them. The group of eight newspaper publishers takes issue with ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot assistant — available in the Windows operating system, the Bing search engine, and other products the software maker produces. The legal challenge comes four months after The New York Times sued OpenAI over copyright infringement in the ChatGPT chatbot that the startup released in late 2022. The New York Times case also touched on the matter of OpenAI models regurgitating information from its articles. Correction: This article has been updated to reflect the correct day the lawsuit against Microsoft and OpenAI was filed.

By 2054, there will be an estimated 422,000 Americans age 100 and older — more than four times the 101,000 in 2024, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data. What's more, the centenarian population has nearly tripled in the last three decades alone, according to Pew. Among the best ways to hedge against outliving one's savings is by working longer, according to retirement experts. That may be more necessary as employers have offloaded responsibility for retirement savings onto workers' shoulders, by shifting from pensions to 401(k)-type retirement plans. "People need to be prepared to work longer," he said.

And that wasn’t always the case.”There were also instances of discrimination that could have easily turned Copeland away from dance all together. “There were times that I was not cast in certain roles because I would stand out too much and kind of ruin the aesthetic, especially if it was a performance that was being filmed,” Copeland told Wallace. “I think about this kind of generational trauma for Black dancers that comes with that role,” she said. Peak oil demand refers to the point in time when the highest level of global crude demand is reached, which will be immediately followed by a permanent decline. This would theoretically decrease the need for investments in crude oil projects and make them less economical as other energy sources take over. "Such narratives only set the global energy system up to fail spectacularly," OPEC Secretary General Haitham al-Ghais said in a Sept. 14 statement. The IEA's roadmap calls for daily oil demand to be slashed by 25% in seven years' time. 'We all strive for the same thing'OPEC leaders, meanwhile, point to continuing yearly increases in oil demand, particularly from major emerging markets like China and India.

Marjorie Taylor Greene sent $2,000 checks to 18 of her colleagues' campaigns in March. But spokespeople for two of those vulnerable Republicans — Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin and Rep. Michelle Steel of California — now say that their campaigns didn't end up cashing the checks. Though the March 29 contributions appear in Greene's campaign filings with the Federal Election Commission, they never appeared in Van Orden or Steel's filings. Greene's campaign, which did not respond to Insider's request for comment, has not amended its filings with the Federal Election Commission to reflect that the checks were never cashed. Van Orden represents a swing district, and Democrats are eager to tie more vulnerable Republican candidates to the party's electorally toxic far right.

Wholesale pork belly prices are currently trading at 270.89 cents per pound. And consumers are about to see even higher prices of bacon, which is primarily cut from pork bellies. Analysts who spoke to CNBC attributed the surge in pork prices partly to a recently imposed animal welfare regulation in California, which came into effect July 1. Proposition 12 played a "major role" in the surge in prices, said Urner Barry pork market analyst, Ryan Hojnowski. Consequently, sellers of bacon will want to keep their profit margins up — thus, the spike in pork belly wholesale prices is going to translate to higher retail and food services prices, he said.

Magnets of traffic and congestion, drive-thrus discourage walking, public transit use and visits to neighboring businesses. A host of cities and regions want the sprawl to stop: Atlanta lawmakers will vote this summer on whether to ban new drive-thrus in the popular Beltline area. Minneapolis; Fair Haven, New Jersey; Creve Coeur, Missouri; Orchard Park, New York, and other cities have banned new drive-thrus in recent years. Experts say pedestrian safety can be improved by tightly managing access along arterial roads and locating drive-thrus away from them. Cities push backAtlanta City Councilman Jason Dozier proposed a bill this year to block new drive-thrus around the Atlanta Beltline, a pedestrian trail along a 22-mile railroad corridor.
